Built in 1826 the light is 23m above mean high water and the 640,000 candela light can be seen for 26 nautical miles. This lighthouse was automated in 1990 and is controlled from Trinity House. It was the home of Grace Darling, who on the 5th September 1838 rescued 9 survivors of the steamship 'Forfarshire' with the help of her farther. The Forfarshire had been forced onto the reef at nearby Big Harcar Rock in a bad storm and sank with the loss of 48 lives.
