Recognized as a distinct breed since the 15th century, it was prized as a war horse and a mount for nobility across Europe. Carthusian monks helped preserve the breed, and the Spanish government historically used Andalusians as diplomatic gifts. Despite population declines in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the breed has recovered and now has over 185,000 registered horses worldwide.
