  • Description:  Burrowing owls live underground in burrows that have been dug out by small mammals or as in this case in farmlands under culverts. Due to their population decline many burrows are being created to help with this problem. The current burrowing owl population estimates are not well known their scarcity suggests significant declines across their range which is now from the Mississippi to the Pacific and in Florida. Most recent official estimates place them at less than 10,000 breeding pairs. Burrowing owls have disappeared from much of their historic range.
