- Description: In the US we call them a draft horse, in the United Kingdom or British Isle it's a draught horse or in the Old English it's a dray horse or dragan meaning to draw or haul. In Dutch it's dragen and German it's tragen meaning to carry and Danish drage meaning to draw. Less often it's called a carthorse, work horse or heavy horse. A draft horse is large and bred to be a working animal doing hard tasks such as plowing and other farm labor. There are a number of breeds, with varying characteristics, but all share common traits of strength, patience, and a docile temperament which made them indispensable to generations of pre-industrial farmers.
